The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defence of Latvia Jānis Garisons will go on a business visit to Poland from 25 January to 27 January to meet representatives of the Polish Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces.
During the visit J. Garisons will meet Deputy Secretary of State of the Polish Ministry of Defence Tomasz Szatkowski to discuss bilateral collaboration of Latvia and Poland in the field of defence and matters related to the implementation of decisions taken during the NATO Warsaw Summit, inter alia creation and deployment of the multinational battalion-sized battle groups in the Baltic States and Poland.
The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defence will also visit the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces in order to discuss practical issues related to the stay of Polish soldiers in Latvia as part of the multinational Canada-led battalion-sized battle group.
J. Garisons will also meet the officials of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Polish Armed Forces to outline the main aspects in collaboration with the Latvian National Guard, as well as experts who ensure cyber protection of the Polish defence authorities.
Poland is one of NATO member states that have confirmed participation in Canada-led multinational battalion-sized battle group in Latvia. Involvement in this battle group has been also confirmed by Albania, Italy, Slovenia, and Spain.
As reported, during the NATO Summit in Warsaw on 8 July 2016 it was announced that a multinational battalion-sized battle groups are to be formed and deployed in the Baltic States and Poland. Furthermore, Canada made a decision to undertake the leadership of the battle group deployed in Latvia.
