Raimonds Bergmanis, Minister for Defence, is going to the informal meeting of EU’s defence ministers on 26-27 April in Valetta, Malta to discuss current defence and security policy issues.
Meeting will focus on ways of strengthening EU’s security and defence capabilities, development of permanent structured cooperation and progress with regard to adoption of defence action plan.
Another focus of the discussion will be strengthening of EU battle groups to ensure efficient engagement of these battle groups in crisis management operations.
Defence ministers will also take stock of military missions and operations – notably the EU Border Assistance Mission in Libya and EUNAVFOR MED operation Sophia, EU’s marine force military operation in the Mediterranean Sea implemented with support of Latvian Naval Forces.
While in Malta, Minister Bergmanis will also meet with Austrian Defence Minister Hans Peter Doskozil to discuss further bilateral defence cooperation between Latvia and Austria.
Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations are among the prominent representatives expected to take part in the informal Council.
EU defence ministers meet four times a year and hold two formal and two informal Council meetings. Informal meetings are traditionally hosted by country presiding over the Council of the EU.
