Republic of Latvia Minister of Defence Award – Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development

The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development was founded on November 11th, 1999 commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Latvian Army. 
The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is conferred as an acknowledgement of appreciation for merit in the development of the National Armed Forces, in the formation of soldiers’ national awareness, and for exemplary service. 

The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is made of silver. The Medal is a round shield that measures 38 mm in diameter. The MoD logo (Latvian riflemen, later Latvian Army headgear insignia) – the radiant sun with three stars surmounting a vertical field gun, muzzle up, and a diagonally crossed sword and rifle, hilt and barrel up, enclosed by an oak wreath is depicted in the centre of the obverse side of the Medal. The reverse has the inscription PAR IEGULDĪJUMU BRUŅOTO SPĒKU ATTĪSTĪBĀ (for Contribution to Armed Forces Development) in the centre which is surrounded by the inscription AIZSARDZĪBAS MINISTRA APBALVOJUMS (Minister of Defence Award). 

The medals are numbered. 

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) Awards Commission reviews recommendations for a person to be awarded with this award and submits its decision to the Minister of Defence. The Medal of Honorary Recognition is conferred by order of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia. 

According to the Statutes of the Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development it is permitted to award a person with the Medal only once.

The Medal of Honourable Merit for Contribution to Armed Forces Development is worn in order of precedence after state awards and the MoD Medal of Honorary Recognition on a 32 mm wide green (symbolizing defence and Latvian land) ribbon separated in the middle with the Latvian red-white-red national colours (symbolizing the Minister of Defence as senior official of Latvian defence). The 10 mm wide ribbon is worn on a dress uniform.
