Canada invests €64 million in military infrastructure development in Latvia
On Wednesday, May 19th, foundation stones were ceremonially laid for new military infrastructure facilities in Lielvārde and Riga, officially marking the start of construction on two major projects worth €64 million. These investments demonstrate Canada’s long-term commitment to strengthening the security of Latvia and NATO’s eastern flank.
Canada has already invested and committed more than €315 million in military infrastructure development in Latvia, including at the military bases “Ādaži”, “Ceri”, and “Lielvārde”. The new projects will significantly expand the operational capabilities of the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia and improve allied force deployment capabilities in Latvia.
The majority of the new investment – €33 million – will be allocated to the construction of a rotary wing apron and flight line at the military base “Lielvārde”. The project includes the development of hangar space, maintenance facilities, and flight line office in support of the Tactical Air Detachment. The new infrastructure will provide the capacity to simultaneously accommodate up to six CH-146 Griffon and four CH-147 Chinook helicopters, as well as support the loading and unloading of other aircraft, including the CC-177 Globemaster strategic transport aircraft.
Meanwhile, €30 will be invested in the construction of two accommodation buildings in the military base “Lielvārde” to sustain deployed personnel. Each building will accommodate 152 soldiers on a daily basis, with the capacity expandable to 304 if necessary. At the same time, construction of a third residential building in Riga is also taking place.
As the framework nation of the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, Canada works closely with the Latvian National Armed Forces and allies from 13 other countries. Investments in infrastructure, equipment, and joint exercises strengthen the brigade’s ability to respond rapidly and effectively ensure the security of Latvia and the entire region.
