On Tuesday, June 10, the Ministry of Defence signed a letter of intent with Sweden on a mutual commitment to conclude an intergovernmental agreement in the future for the supply of 18 “Archer” 8x8 wheeled artillery systems to the National Armed Forces, potentially also promoting the participation of the local defence industry in the supply security chain.

“The agreement between Sweden and Latvia marks a significant step in closer defense cooperation between the two countries. The agreement provides a solid basis for joint military exercises, soldier training, and the presence of effective artillery systems starting in 2026. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening regional security and deterrence, especially in these geopolitically challenging times,” emphasises Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds.

The letter of intent was signed by the Deputy State Secretary for Procurement of the Ministry of Defence, Major General Andis Dilāns, and the Director of the Swedish National Armaments, Goran Martensson (Göran Mårtensson).

The letter of intent includes a commitment to move towards the creation of a joint “Archer” 6x6 wheeled artillery unit. The letter of intent also commits the parties to implement joint training of Latvian and Swedish personnel, which may be agreed upon later by the armed forces of both countries. In addition, in the signed document, the Swedish armed forces commit to provide leasing of the systems until the delivery of the new equipment.
