Latvian Parliament approves participation of the National Armed Forces in international operations in the Strait of Hormuz
On 24 September, the Saeima approved the participation of the National Armed Forces in international operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Latvia’s involvement is part of international efforts to restore freedom of navigation and ensure the safe movement of commercial vessels along one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
Latvia’s main contribution to the operations will be provided by mine countermeasure experts and capabilities of the Latvian Navy. Up to 20 Latvian military personnel are planned to participate in the operations, including an underwater explosive ordnance disposal unit equipped with autonomous mine clearance systems, as well as staff officers and instructors. The Latvian contingent will conduct mine detection and neutralisation, coordinate mine clearance activities in the Strait, and participate in other measures aimed at restoring safe navigation.
Latvia’s participation has clearly defined tasks and limitations – Latvian military personnel will not participate in activities that would support the United States as a belligerent party in the conflict with Iran. The objective of the operations is to promote freedom of navigation and international maritime security by ensuring unhindered transit through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982.
Given that mine clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz may take 12 to 16 months, the participation of Latvian military personnel in the operations will be possible until 1st September 2028. Participation in the operations will not only strengthen international security but will also provide Latvia’s armed forces with valuable operational and tactical experience in mine countermeasure operations and international cooperation.
The Strait of Hormuz is critically important for the global flow of energy resources and goods; therefore, its effective closure would have a significant impact on international supply chains and global economic stability. Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international maritime law, and Latvia supports the efforts of its Allies to prevent threats to it. In this regard, Latvia is working closely with the United States, the United Kingdom and France, while also supporting broader international initiatives aimed at ensuring safe navigation in the region.
