Latvian soldiers deployed to an international operation in Kosovo were honored in a solemn ceremony

On Wednesday, July 22, at the "Ādaži" military base, leadership of the defence sector held a ceremony to send off Latvian soldiers to the NATO-led international operation in Kosovo (KFOR). Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis and Chief of the Joint Staff of the National Armed Forces, Major General Georgs Kerlins, presented the soldiers with traditional farewell tokens - the Latvian flag and a loaf of rye bread.

"Involvement in this NATO operation is a significant contribution by Latvia toward strengthening international security and a demonstration of our readiness to safeguard peace in Europe. I am truly proud of your high level of professionalism and am confident in your ability to execute the assigned tasks flawlessly. May your service be successful, your team united, and may each of you have a safe return home!" emphasized Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis in his address to the troops.

In the Kosovo peacekeeping operation, Latvia participates with a light infantry company integrated into a US-led multinational battalion. The primary duties of the Latvian contingent include providing mobile force protection, patrolling, crowd control operations, and maintaining quick-reaction capabilities.

Participation in the mission enables the National Armed Forces to continue enhancing interoperability with allied armed forces, strengthen tactical capabilities, and contribute to European and transatlantic security.

Involvement in KFOR is vital not only from a military standpoint but also politically - it solidifies Latvia's cooperation with NATO allies, particularly the United States, and demonstrates Latvia's commitment to promoting global stability.
