Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis discusses regional security and military cooperation with U.S. congressional delegation
On Sunday, 26 July, Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis met with members of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations delegation to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional geopolitical challenges.
During the meeting, the officials focused on strengthening defence capabilities and advancing cooperation in the defence industry. They also discussed the outcomes of the recent NATO Summit in Ankara and coordinated further steps to ensure long-term support for Ukraine.
“The United States is one of Latvia’s most important strategic partners. In today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical environment, our transatlantic ties, shared values, and common understanding of security are of vital importance. Close cooperation, both within NATO and through bilateral initiatives, is a direct contribution not only to Latvia’s security but also to the security of the Alliance and Europe as a whole,” Minister Melnis emphasized.
The United States has long been Latvia’s strategic partner and ally, playing a significant role in strengthening the country’s security. Relations between Latvia and the United States are founded on shared values and common security interests. Latvia cooperates with the United States within NATO, as well as through other multilateral and bilateral frameworks aimed at enhancing defence.
