On Tuesday, June 3, the Ministry of Defence and the German company “EuroSpike” signed a contract worth 81 million euros for the purchase of “Spike” anti-tank missile systems, ammunition and other equipment.

"The “Spike” anti-tank missile systems have proven their effectiveness and fully meet the operational requirements of the National Armed Forces. In order to strengthen the combat capabilities of the regular units of the National Armed Forces and the National Guard, we will purchase additional systems to complement the existing stock of this weaponry," said Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds.

The “Spike” anti-tank missile systems are scheduled to be delivered to Latvia starting from 2028.

The contract also includes 30% local industry involvement in the completion of the purchase. According to the Defence Industry and Innovation Support Strategy, the inclusion of a security of supply requirement for local industry involvement of up to 30% in large capability defence procurement contracts is one of the key instruments for the development of the local defence industry.

The Israeli-made “Spike” anti-tank missile system is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. "Spike” systems consist of fourth and fifth generation electro-optical missile systems, which provide high hit accuracy and are capable of destroying various types of armoured vehicles, including battle tanks.

The “Spike” system's built-in data link between the missile and the launcher allows operators to remain invisible and out of reach of the enemy while maintaining full control over the missiles fired.

Previously in 2018, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with “Eurospike” for the purchase of “Spike” anti-missile systems, which has already led to cooperation between the company and local industry.
