Today, September 12, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G. Grynkewich announced the creation of the mission "Eastern Sentry", which will strengthen NATO's eastern flank defense and deterrence.

The task of the mission "Eastern Sentry" will be to protect the alliance's territory against Russian airspace violations in NATO member states.

"The mission "Eastern Sentry" demonstrates the alliance's determination to respond to Russia's aggressive actions in order to protect every inch of the alliance's territory. The new NATO mission will strengthen Latvia's air defense," emphasizes Minister of Defene Andris Sprūds. ""Eastern Sentry" means a greater NATO presence in the Baltic states – especially in the air, stronger air defense, and a faster and more effective response."

Denmark, France, Great Britain, and Germany have already announced the deployment of forces and capabilities as part of the mission "Eastern Sentry", and other NATO member states are expected to join in the near future. The mission will use anti-drone sensors and weapons to detect, track, and neutralize drones.

"Eastern Sentry" was established following the North Atlantic Council meeting on September 10, where allies discussed the situation in response to Poland's request for consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty.
