A. Sprūds in Brussels: Ukraine’s involvement in the European Defence Fund will strengthen security across Europe
On Wednesday, February 11, Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds participated in the European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting of defence ministers in Brussels. During the session, ministers from member states discussed increasing military support for Ukraine and strengthening European defence capabilities amidst changing geopolitical circumstances.
In the first working session dedicated to Ukraine, A. Sprūds emphasized the necessity of supporting Ukraine’s participation in the European Defence Fund. Such a step would not only open new opportunities for companies to conduct broader product testing but also facilitate the transfer of valuable practical knowledge regarding the use of military equipment in real combat conditions.
"For Europe to adapt to the rapidly changing security situation, we must primarily strengthen our own defence capabilities and industrial capacity. However, European security is inseparable from the situation in Ukraine. By supporting Ukraine’s participation in the European Defence Fund, we achieve a double benefit: we strengthen the Ukrainian defence industry in its fight against the aggressor, while simultaneously fostering innovation in Europe based on real battlefield experience. We must continue to actively counter Russia’s efforts to destabilize Europe, and the most effective way to do so is by helping Ukraine win," A. Sprūds emphasized.
During the meeting, the Minister reaffirmed Latvia’s commitment to continue providing comprehensive support to Ukraine both bilaterally and through international mechanisms, including the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine and the Coalition of the Willing.
In the second session, representatives of the member states discussed current European security issues. During these discussions, A. Sprūds highlighted the importance of transatlantic cooperation and EU-NATO synergy, stressing the need for these institutions to complement one another to effectively address today’s global security challenges.
