What to do upon receiving a cell broadcast notification about a potential threat in Latvian airspace
Regional security challenges and situations where unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) approach or cross Latvian airspace demonstrate how crucial fast and accurate public information is during crises. To warn residents of a potential threat immediately, a cell broadcast system is used in Latvia.
If a loud warning signal sounds on your mobile phone and a notification about an airspace threat appears, the most important thing is to remain calm and act according to the instructions.
What is a cell broadcast notification and why did you receive it?
Cell broadcast is a technology that allows the responsible authorities to send an emergency notification simultaneously to all mobile phones within a specific area.
In the event of an airspace threat, for example, if an unidentified drone or other flying object is detected, the notification is sent so that residents can seek shelter as quickly as possible and avoid the potential risks posed by the object falling or being neutralized.
What to do if you receive a cell broadcast notification about a potential airspace threat?
Remain calm and read the notification carefully. It will contain the most essential information and further recommendations. Follow the instructions provided in the cell broadcast message.
Seek shelter indoors. If you are outside, go to the nearest safe building immediately. Close windows and doors, and stay in rooms that are further away from windows. It is recommended to follow the "two-wall principle," seeking shelter behind at least two walls to protect yourself from potential shrapnel or shockwave impacts.
Follow updates from reliable sources – on the National Armed Forces website www.mil.lv, as well as on the websites and official social media accounts of the involved services.
What to do if you spot a suspicious object or its debris?
If you spot a fallen drone or its parts, do not approach it under any circumstances. The object may be equipped with explosives. Report the suspicious object or its debris immediately to the State Police or the State Fire and Rescue Service by calling 112. Indicate the location, time, and your observations as accurately as possible.
Do not endanger yourself and do not spread sensitive information
For your own safety, do not go outside or approach windows to film the drone or the ongoing events. We also urge you not to post such videos or photos on social networks. Such information only endanger the person filming but can also provide the adversary with data regarding Latvia's defense capabilities and the operations of our services.
Check your phone settings and prepare in advance
The Ministry of Defence invites everyone to check their mobile phone settings and ensure that emergency alerts are enabled.
It is also recommended to familiarize yourself with the "72 Hours" booklet available at www.sargs.lv, and to ensure that your home is stocked with essential supplies – water, food, and medication reserves, as well as first aid supplies.
State defense services and the National Armed Forces continuously monitor the situation and stand ready to respond to any threat. However, correct actions in the first minutes are vital for your safety and the safety of your family.
