Defence Minister’s Badge of Honour for significant contribution to the development of national defence

Introduction 

Badge of Honour for significant contribution to the development of national defence, awarded by the defence minister of the Republic of Latvia, was introduced in 2020. 
It recognises recipient’s notable input in the development of national defence, moving defence sector further towards new goals and future achievements.

It is awarded for important contribution to the development of national defence, successful implementation of new capability projects, capability upgrade initiatives, leadership in further strengthening and boosting of national defence framework and capabilities.

Design and elements

Badge is made of silver. The front (obverse) is adorned with white enamelled eight-pointed sun with gilded bottom rays. Medallion in the centre of the badge contains gilded oak trunk with white enamelled leaves against dark-red enamelled background.

The back (reverse) carries the engraving “For significant contribution to the development of national defence”.
Badge has 32mm-wide moire ribbon. It is dark grey with silver side stripes.
All badges are numbered.

Awarding

Badge of Honour for significant contribution to the development of national defence is awarded on the basis of the order signed by minister of defence. Potential recipients are selected and nominated by the Awards Commission of the Ministry of Defence. 

Minister of defence, state secretary, chief of the defence staff, heads of defence institutions and agencies reporting to the Ministry of Defence can nominate candidates for Badge of Honour for significant contribution to the development of national defence by submitting a formal application to the Awards Commission. 

Badge of Honour for significant contribution to the development of national defence is awarded only once to the same recipient.

How to wear

Badge is worn together with other state honours and defence minister’s awards as regulated by the Ministry of Defence Regulation 11-NOT ‘Rules on military awards’ of 2 June 2006. A small piece of ribbon is worn by recipients on military uniform every day.
