6x6 armoured personnel carriers

The aim of the project is to supply the National Armed Forces with 6x6 armoured personnel carriers and command/control vehicles suitable for Latvian conditions, thus strengthening the tactical mobility capabilities and significantly broadening NAF operational capabilities, as well as improving mobility and command/control of NAF units, while also enhancing the physical security of troops.

According to project, 6x6 armoured personnel carriers and command/control vehicles will be purchased and introduced between 2021 and 2030. Project is based on 6x6 armoured vehicle research and development agreement between Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and the company Patria. The first units have been delivered and introduced by NAF in October 2021. Procurement of carriers also includes purchase of necessary communication systems, spare parts and maintenance equipment. Personnel has also been trained.

Defence Partnership Latvia, a company of Patria Group, opened its factory in Valmiera on 24 May 2024. This plant will assemble the carriers delivered to NAF. On 5 August 2024, in a special ceremony, the first ever made in Latvia 6x6 Patria armoured personnel carrier was delivered to the National Armed Forces.

Project required changes in the national legislation to allow armoured vehicles go outside the training areas for quality test drives. Once adopted, on 17 February 2025, the first Patria 6x6 APCs took to Latvian public roads for the test drive. It is also planned to start supplying Patria carriers made in Latvia to Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2025.
