Anti-ship capabilities

Integrity, monitoring and defence of Latvia’s territorial waters in the Baltic Sea requires Latvian Naval Force to implement a line of tasks that are aimed at securing the territorial sovereignty and protection of the coastline of Latvia. To achieve the target, Latvian Naval Force needs weapons systems that can efficiently deter and, if necessary, protect against potential aggressor.

In 2024, to boost the firepower and be able to hit targets on bigger distances, Latvia began implementing agreements for acquisition of close and far-range anti-ship missiles, or the Naval Strike Missile. This marks the development of anti-ship missile capabilities. This will enable NAF to add both close and far-range anti-ship missiles to its arsenal and thus acquire capability to impact and destroy ships in the sea and also on the shore when there is direct visibility or need to hit targets beyond this range.

Anti-ship missile capability development will comprise of personnel training, construction of necessary infrastructure, personnel deployment, equipment and ammunition storages, and procurement of adequate materials and technologies.
