Indirect fire support system development project

Aim of the project is to facilitate introduction and development of the indirect fire support capabilities in the National Armed Forces. Such step will lead to enhanced mobility, counter-mobility, general fire support and survival capabilities across the regular units of the National Armed Forces and National Guard.

Project envisages procurement of self-propelled artillery, mine launchers and artillery rocket systems, development of a number of capability factors like personnel, infrastructure and equipment. Bilateral agreement with the Federal Ministry of Defence of Austria, signed in 2017 to further strengthen military capabilities, foresees delivery of M109A5Oe self-propelling howitzers, including fire control and training platform, mine launchers and training programme. In 2023  Latvia and the US signed an agreement for delivery of HIMARS high mobility artillery rocket system and ATACMS precision-strike rocket systems. These systems will be delivered between 2027 and 2029.

Work is underway on the modernization of the M109 self-propelled howitzers and the implementation of the procurement initiatives that have been launched, with the aim of establishing a comprehensive system capable of effectively providing combat support to National Armed Forces units on the battlefield in cooperation with the forces of other NATO countries. This will be achieved through the acquired weapon systems, communications and target acquisition equipment, ammunition stocks, and investments in resources to enhance the professional skills of personnel.
